PSA:Help reduce hopper lag!

Hoppers. they're super useful for all kinds of things. unfortunately, lots of them can cause lots of server lag. the solution? put containers above any hoppers that don't need to pick up items. what this does is stops hoppers checking to see if there are item entities to pick up above the hopper.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qEi-tKrxDNk This video shows exactly how this effect works.

Notably: 27,000 hoppers were placed into a multiplayer server. the hoppers used 93% of the server's CPU power. then, furnaces were placed over every single one of those 27,000 hoppers. the CPU usage reduced to 15%. This is a MASSIVE improvement in performance, and if lots of people did this with their hopper-powered devices, it could make a HUGE difference in our how fast the server runs.

Ok. Can I use any solid block, or does it have to be something special?

Has to be a container of some sort, like a furnace (even chest minecarts work, though that's not really practical)

Wow, I didn't know this.. This could be useful for my giant egg farm with like 500 hoppers! I'll get to it as soon as I can ;)

Wow I didn't know this, I don't know why I didn't see this post earlier.
I will defiantly go though and 'furnace up' the machines that have a few hoppers. I have moved away from strings of long hoppers and more in to water and ice so that it can flow right in to a glass elevator to keep red stone ticks to a minimum.

Thanks for posting this 8-)

Update:

New tests show that droppers now cause less lag than furnaces. Will upload test videos later on.
